Whether as a family guardian or a working dog, natural bobtail Rottweilers bring the same dependable qualities that have made the breed cherished worldwide.
Other Names: Natural Bobtail Trait, T locus
Affected Genes: T
T Locus: The T Locus (Natural Bobtail) is a key genetic factor that determines tail length in many dog breeds. A DNA variant in the T gene, which plays a crucial role during early embryonic development, can lead to the development of a naturally short (bobtail) or even a completely absent tail.
This natural bobtail trait is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, meaning only one copy of the T gene variant is needed to produce a natural bobtail. However, inheriting two copies of the T gene (T/T) is not compatible with life, leading to the death of the pup in utero. Because of this, breeding two dogs with natural bobtails (T/t) may result in smaller litter sizes due to the genetic incompatibility of double copies of the T gene.
Genetic Testing: A genetic test can determine if a rottweiler has a natural bobtail or if its tail has been docked.
